I can’t believe we’re here, he thought
It’s marvellous that we’re here
Through all the tears that love has brought
The struggles and the cheer
Now in this Christmas room they’d caught
The essence of things dear
The ceiling hung with elegant chains
The holly over the glass…
On her sweet face beauty remains
He thought, and will not pass.
And love that every thing engrains
Touches them all with class
Though hardly rich in worldly dross
Wealthy in heavenly things
They sat replete: if time’s chaos
Brings hectic change no strings
Could hold our love, he thought, or loss
Restrain a love with wings.
